Self-Awareness
One of the most useful skills I developed during practicum, as the result of feedback I received, was the awareness of the volume and speed of how I talk. I believe that this skill has proved to be extremely valuable during my internship because I am better able to monitor the effect my voice has on those around me. I demonstrate this skill by adjusting my voice to a quiet and slow pace if a student is in crisis in order to bring down the student’s heightened level of arousal. If I am entering a classroom, I demonstrate this skill by assessing the mood and level of activity in the room and adjust the volume and tone of my voice accordingly.

Practicum Peer Evaluations
Practicum provided me with the experience to work in a mental health clinic and receive feedback from my peers and supervisors. At the end of each term, I received an evaluation which gave me feedback on my strengths and areas for improvement. Being open to feedback is a crucial skill for school counselors to have if they are going to continue to improve.
