Classroom Guidance Home Links
Strong communication with families help build trust and connection with the school. It also gives families the opportunity to reinforce what students are learning. Both the Bullying Prevention and Child Protection Units of Second Step provide Home Links and Family Letters in English and Spanish explaining the concepts of the lessons and activities to practice as a family. By sending home information after each lesson, families are aware of what their child is learning and they are invited to contact the school if they have questions or concerns.

Attendance data
Attendance is crucial to academic success and has been a huge priority at both of my sites. One of my responsibilities at my elementary school every week is to analyze the attendance data and decide if further action needs to be taken. This is more than just looking at who has broken the truancy law, I also factor in if the family is homeless, if the student is receiving special education services, whether the absences are excused or unexcused, consecutive or nonconsecutive, due to a medical condition, and/or chronic year after year. Once I have compiled a list, I then consult with the principal, school social worker, secretaries and sometimes the school nurse in order to decide what action should be taken. More often than not, we decide to contact the family to learn more about why the student was absent and express our care and concern.
