Counseling Referrals

As a school counselor, I recognize the limitations to the mental health services I can provide and will therefore refer families to outside agencies for ongoing treatment. I compiled a list of agencies near my elementary school which I could distribute to families seeking mental health services. All of the agencies on this list took Oregon Health Plan insurance and most offered counselors who were bilingual and/or bicultural.

Referrals to Western Psychological and Counseling Services

Occasionally students are in need of ongoing mental health services and the family has limited transportation to take them to an outside agency. For those cases, I refer the students to our school based mental health therapist. The school based mental health therapist is employed through Western Psychological and Counseling Services and is able to accept most insurance plans.

Winter Resource List

I advocated for lower socioeconomic status students and families by researching and creating a ‘winter resource list’ with names, addresses, and contact information of agencies willing to provide food, clothing, medical aid, and toy donations over winter break. This had never been done before because it was assumed that families would find their own resources. I know that many families in need are not able to research organizations online, and that by creating and sending home an informational flier, we could increase the likelihood of families accessing the necessary resources.
