Attendance data

Attendance is crucial to academic success and has been a huge priority at both of my sites. One of my responsibilities at my elementary school every week is to analyze the attendance data and decide if further action needs to be taken. This is more than just looking at who has broken the truancy law, I also factor in if the family is homeless, if the student is receiving special education services, whether the absences are excused or unexcused, consecutive or nonconsecutive, due to a medical condition, and/or chronic year after year. Once I have compiled a list, I then consult with the principal, school social worker, secretaries and sometimes the school nurse in order to decide what action should be taken. More often than not, we decide to contact the family to learn more about why the student was absent and express our care and concern.

El Programa Hispano

El Programa Hispano is a school based program offered through Catholic Charities which provides mentoring, skill building, tutoring, academic support, advocacy, family engagement and recreation to Latino students. At my middle school we have a large Spanish speaking Latino population, so this program has been extremely helpful for students and families who are wanting extra support and would prefer to work with someone from their cultural background.

Title 10

I got a referral from a teacher who was concerned that one of her students was soon to be homeless. I called the student into my office to find out more about the situation and she told me that her father had lost his job and so her family was being kicked out of their apartment and moving into an RV outside of the district boundaries. I then contacted the School District Homeless Liaison to find out what resources were available to the family and what the family would need to do to access those resources before calling the student’s mom. The student’s mom was very grateful that I had called and appreciated the resources I offered her. She was embarrassed to call the homeless liaison herself and was grateful that I had reached out to her. The parents decided to transfer the student to another school for the remainder of the school year but were hopeful that the father would get his job back so they could re-enroll the student in our school.
